Real Madrid head coach Pablo Laso has recovered and is back home feeling perfectly fine, he wrote in a post shared on Twitter Tuesday. “I was lucky that life gave me a warning,” he wrote in his message featured on social media, “As the doctor told me yesterday, I am better than five days ago.”
Laso, 54, was admitted to La Moraleja University Hospital after suffering a heart attack, as announced by Madrid on Sunday. He was since discharged from the intensive care unit but remained in the hospital to be monitored, as noted in Monday’s official update on his health status. In addition, Los Blancos named assistant coach Chus Mateo as the caretaker for the remainder of the 2021-22 season, namely the Playoffs in Spain’s Liga Endesa.
Upon being cleared to leave the hospital and head back home, the experienced play-caller, born in Vitoria-Gasteiz, went on stressing his desire to return to his normal duties as soon as possible. He also thanked everyone for all the support in messages he received following the scare and also the medical team for taking care of him the last few days.
Before being hospitalized, Laso had guided the Whites to a 2-0 lead in the ACB Semifinals best-of-five series versus Bitci Baskonia. Game 3 will be held in Vitoria-Gasteiz tonight (21:00 CET). If necessary, Game 4 and Game 5 will follow Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Top-seeded FC Barcelona and Joventut are currently knotted at one win apiece in the other Semifinal series set to continue Wednesday.
