Canelo Alvarez will face Gennady Golovkin in HUGE trilogy fight on September 17, with Eddie Hearn relishing ‘the biggest fight in boxing’ for undisputed super-middleweight title
The massive trilogy fight between Canlo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will take place on September 17, it has been confirmed.
The Mexican superstar is to lock horns with his old rival in what promises to be another epic encounter for the undisputed super-middleweight title.
Both of the first two encounters went the distance and the pair know each other incredibly well having shared 24 rounds of thrilling boxing.
A trilogy bout between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin has been confirmed
The announcement was made about one of boxing’s biggest fights going ahead in September
‘I feel very happy and proud to be able to give the best fights and this fight won’t be an exception’, said Alvarez after the announcement.
‘GGG’ simply added ‘I hope to see you on September 17’.
Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn talked up the bout, adding: ‘The Canelo vs. GGG trilogy is the biggest fight in boxing and I am delighted to get this made for September 17.
‘These are two men that bitterly dislike each other and want to end this incredible series with a blistering KO.
‘I truly believe this will be the most thrilling fight between these two great champions and will be fireworks from the first bell to the last man standing.’
Canelo fought to a draw in the first fight with GGG and won the second on points
Canelo is looking to to bounce back from his defeat by Dimitry Bivol earlier this month
Golovkin is now 40 and his best years are behind him but the powerful Kazakh will still pose a threat to his familiar foe.
He has won all four of his fight since his rematch with Canelo but was unconvincing in the most recent victory over Ryōta Murata, despite eventually winning by TKO in round nine.
In the first clash between Canelo and GGG, the bout finished in a draw in 2017 before Alvarez defeated him via majority decision a year later.
Alvarez is expected to rematch Bivol after his trilogy bout, although the interest in that will dwindle if he loses to Golovkin.
Alvarez wants a rematch with Bivol but that will have to wait until after the trilogy
