By Sean Jones: George Kambosos Jr. made weight at 134.49 lbs after missing it on his first two attempts on the scale on Friday for his undisputed lightweight fight against Devin Haney in Australia.
Interestingly, Kambosos (20-0, 10 KOs) had the gall to imply that he might have come in overweight on purpose to play mind games with Haney. Sean Jones doesn’t think anyone bought into that bit of blather because he looked like he was coming unglued.
“Maybe I did it on purpose,” said Kambosos about him coming in overweight, sounding as if he was trying to whitewash his struggles in making weight.
If Kambosos intentionally missed weight, he wouldn’t have been so overjoyed at making weight at 134.49 lbs. He looked like someone that had just gotten what he wanted for Christmas. You could see the relief written all over Kambosos’ face, it was plane as day.
Initially, Kamboso had come in at 135.36 lbs after stripping down, putting him at risk of losing his unified titles. He was then given two hours to lose the .36 lbs, which he was able to successfully do.
In contrast, Haney (27-0, 15 KOs) was a professional about it, easily making weight at 135 lbs in his first attempt, and smiling from ear to ear after seeing Kambosos come in heavy.
It’s a good time for Kambosos to start thinking about what he’ll do if he gets trounced by Haney on Sunday night because he could be throwing his career away if he activates the rematch clause.
“Art of war, baby. Deception, let them believe that this was done. Everything is for a cause, everything is for a process, trust me. It changes nothing. It changes his mindset now,” said Kambosos when asked how him coming in overweight on the initial attempt changed things.
“134.49 🤫 ART OF WAR ⚔️ DECEPTION!! See You All Tomorrow,” said Kambosos on Twitter.
“Look, for me, I believe I am undisputed. The WBC believes it, the ESPN believes it because they had [Teofimo] Lopez on not long ago, and they had the ‘former undisputed,’” said Kambosos to Fight Hub TV, saying he’s already undisputed at lightweight, even though his WBC Franchise belt is a belt given out to fighters the sanctioning bodies likes rather than a title that can be won & list.
“So many people believe so that I am the undisputed, but what a blessing to be able to come back home and do it in front of my people. I feel like this is the way it’s meant to be. It’s my destiny. This is two-time. It’s never been done,” said Kambosos.
