By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. is denying any truth to the reports of welterweight champions Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford “closing in on a deal” for a fight between them in October in Las Vegas.
Earlier on Friday, one of ESPN’s eager reporters posted that the Spence vs. Crawford fight was close for October, but apparently, the reporter jumped the gun.
Mayweather knows Al Haymon well and has the inside information on what’s going on with the Spence-Crawford fight, and he’s saying the report is “not true.”
Chris Williams isn’t surprised in the least that there’s no truth to the report of the Spence vs. Crawford fight “closing in on a deal” because that’s going to be a nearly impossible one to make.
With IBF/WBA/WBC 147-lb champion Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) being the bigger pay-per-view attraction, holding more titles than Crawford, and filling stadiums, it’s a fight that is going to be very difficult to make.
Ultimately, it’s up to WBO welterweight champion Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs) how badly he wants the fight with Spence. If the Nebraska native wants the fight badly enough, he’ll not price himself out by asking for the moon & the stars.
Crawford has his back against the wall when it comes to the negotiations with Spence.
If Crawford doesn’t accept the offers, he’ll be stuck having to defend against Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis soon, and that’s going to be a very difficult fight to win for the 34-year-old.
Even if Crawford were younger, it would be a tough ask for him to beat Boots Ennis, but now that he’s pushing 35, and has been dealing with inactivity issues, fighting only once a year, he’d be over his head against the young lion.
“Please don’t post this because it’s NOT true,” said Floyd Mayweather Jr. on social media about the news released by ESPN on Friday about the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford fight for October.
“Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford are closing in on a deal for an undisputed welterweight championship fight in October in Las Vegas, sources tell ESPN. No agreement yet, but no real stumbling block. PBC PPV for this genuine super fight,” said Mike Coppinger on Twitter.
It’s getting boring with the way different people keep reporting about how Spence-Crawford is supposedly close, and fans get their hopes up and then have them dashed when the fight doesn’t happen.
It would be better for eager reporters to focus on getting it right rather than trying to be first, and looking silly when it turns out to be fake news.
Chris Williams has serious doubts the fight will happen at all unless Crawford comes down to earth. Like I said, his alternatives aren’t good with Boots Ennis coming for him.
