By Sam Volz: Ryan Garcia says he believes Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis does want to fight him next in November or December, and he’s ready to make it.
Ryan says Tank (27-0, 15 KOs) wouldn’t have called him out in the ring before & after his fight against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on May 28th at the Barclays Center if he wasn’t interested in making that match-up.
If Tank chooses not to fight Ryan Garcia next, his management will likely put him in against undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney or Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz.
While there would be a lot of interest in a Tank-Haney fight, you can’t say the same for Tank-Cruz.
That’s a rematch that doesn’t need to happen because the injured Davis already beat Pitbull Cruz last December, and fans don’t need to see them run it back yet.
If Pitbull Cruz had beaten two or three quality guys since his loss, that would make it worthwhile for a rematch with Tank. But the only guy Cruz has beaten since his loss is 40-year-old Yuriorkis Gamboa.
“‘F me,’ then why are you screaming my name outside of your fight?” said Ryan Garcia to Fighthype about Tank telling him to ‘Shut the F*** up’ on social media when he commented on the Kambosos vs. Haney fight being “boring.”
“He was talking about, ‘You next. You next,‘ so why should I should up if you’re the one talking like that? Now, it’s either you’re going to want to do it or not do it.
“Don’t tell me when you’re fighting in the ring you’re not really going to be about it. He can say, ‘Shut up’ all he wants. He wants that fight,” said Ryan about Tank wanting to fight him.
“What I do know is what I want next, and it’s Tank Davis. That’s what I’ve said before in the past. I just want that. I think it’s exciting,” said Ryan about him and Gervonta fighting.
Unfortunately for Ryan, he might not get the fight with Tank unless he agrees to the purse split that his promoters will be offering.
Under an ideal scenario, Ryan might be given a 60-40 split in a take-it-or-leave-it offer. More likely, he’ll be offered a 70-30 split because he doesn’t hold a belt and never has.
“It definitely wasn’t the most exciting fight, but Devin Haney, congrats to him for winning that fight,” said Ryan Garcia on Haney’s win over unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. last Saturday night in Melbourne, Australia.
“He did his thing. I just didn’t see any urgency from them to try and separate themselves from one another. Like the fight between Leonard and Hearns, it was for undisputed something like that. All I know is they went for it.
“They wanted to separate themselves, as in, ‘I’m the best guy here,’ and I didn’t see that [from Haney or Kambosos]. That’s on them. Some people are happy with, ‘Let me just get the W.’ Some people are just different people,” said Ryan.
