JAMIE CARRAGHER told Gareth Southgate’s sledgers to “shut up, you clowns.”
England’s 4-0 defeat to Hungary was a game of few laughs.
But former Three Lions’ defender Carragher blasted fans who chanted “You don’t know what you’re doing” amid the Molineux mauling.
The Liverpool legend pointed to boss Southgate taking England to the 2018 World Cup last four and the Euro 2020 final.
Southgate himself insisted he had to use this summer’s Nations League to try a few things, but saw his experimental line-up suffer their heaviest home defeat since 1928 and again fail to score in open play.
And for many supporters it all got too much when he replaced winger Bukayo Saka with centre-back Bukayo Saka at 3-0 down.
But Sky Sports pundit Carragher responded fiercely on social media.
He tweeted: “’You don’t know what you’re doing’ shut up you clowns. This manager has taken the country in two tournaments to the best positions since 1966. #ENGvHUN“.
Some armchair critics backed Carragher’s belief that Southgate is still well in credit due to his big-tournament achievements.
But others claimed he’s had it lucky with favourable draws during those campaigns.

One posted: “Golden generation just lost 4-0 at home in a competitive game. He’s not immune from criticism, that was abysmal.”
And although Joe Cole insisted Southgate DOES know what he’s doing, the ex-England midfielder blasted a ‘dreadful’ performance.
The former Chelsea and Liverpool playmaker told Channel 4: “It’s shocking. The performance was shocking, the players weren’t at it.
“There was no cohesion. The attitude was wrong from the start. They weren’t at it, it wasn’t aggressive.
“From the fans, I understand the reaction but we have to put some perspective on it.
“Gareth Southgate does know what he’s doing. He’s taken the team to two semi-finals, he’s the most successful manager since Alf Ramsey. That’s factual.
“Tonight was dreadful. They’ll get a dressing down and they’ll feel sorry for themselves but put some perspective on it.”
However, one-time Anfield left-back Stephen Warnock suggested only a new manager could turn the Three Lions into World Cup winners.
The twice-capped Englishman told BBC Radio 5Live: “What if this is the same in September and you have two performances where the team looks lost – they have looked lost tonight.
“Then you have to change it and you will not give the manager time to implement his style. I didn’t see anything from England tonight and haven’t seen anything from them in the last four games.
This is the best group of players we’ve had in a long time and we’re going to give up an opportunity to win the World Cup.
Stephen Warnock
“I’m always been one where I don’t want a manager to be sacked, but I’m not sure he is the man.
“There are other candidates that will be more suited to it and Gareth Southgate will be under pressure.
“This is the best group of players we’ve had in a long time and we’re going to give up an opportunity to win the World Cup.
“I think this team can win a World Cup if they are managed in the right way. They have players who play for Manchester City and Liverpool and they should be achieving more.”
