Fans and former players have lauded Liverpool’s blockbuster signing of Benfica hitman Darwin Nunez, following the Uruguayan’s £140,000-a-week move to Anfield on Tuesday.
The initial £64.1 million fee agreed between Liverpool and the Portuguese giants is expected to rise to an overall package in the region of £85 million, which would make Nunez a new club record signing.
The 22-year-old scored 34 times in 41 appearances with Benfica last campaign and is expected to add to the already-explosive firepower at Liverpool’s disposal in attack.

Jurgen Klopp has strengthened his frontline with the forward, who could cost up to £85 million
The Reds’ previous transfer record came in 2018 when Virgil van Dijk signed from Southampton for £75 million.
The Dutch centre-back has since become a revelation at Anfield, using his defensive talents to guide the club to both a Champions League title and a Premier League crown.
And it seems fans and former players – including Alan Shearer – believe Liverpool have once again struck gold with their six-year capture of Nunez.

The all-time Premier League goal-scorer took to social media to label the deal as a ‘very good signing’, whilst one fan said the new star ‘ticks all the boxes’ and has ‘massive potential’.
Another remarked that defenders should be filled with fear next season, having Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Nunez charging at them on the break every week.
And former Liverpool left-back and Champions League winner Djimi Traore also posted on Twitter to welcome Nunez to the ‘best English club’.

The forward, who has already made 11 caps for Uruguay, scored 26 goals in 28 league appearances for Benfica last campaign after missing the start of the season with a knee injury.
By comparison, he only managed five goals in the same number of matches during 2020-21, although he did provide 10 assists in Liga Portugal.
Liverpool fans will hope the addition of Nunez can help get the better of Manchester City next campaign, as both clubs prepare for another assault on the Premier League title.
