Liverpool are closing in on a deal for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, talkSPORT understands, with terms ‘agreed’ between club and player.
The Uruguayan will reportedly sign a five-year deal with the Merseysiders, who will pay €80m plus €20m add-on fees – making him the club’s record signing.
Nunez impressed for Benfica last season, scoring 34 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions.
That included two against Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-finals, which made him one of Europe’s most in-demand strikers this summer.
And he now looks set to sign for the Reds, as they look for a replacement for Bayern Munich-bound Sadio Mane.
talkSPORT’s Alex Crook says he expects both deals to go through, with Liverpool holding out for around £40million for their Senegalese star.
“I think both [deals] will go through,” Crook told talkSPORT. “I think Sadio Mane has got his heart set on the move to Bayern Munich.
“I think a couple of offers that have been put in so far have been described as derisory.
“I think one of them, in order to get the full payment, he’d have to win the Ballon d’Or three times!
“Bearing in mind Luka Modric is the only one in about the last 15 years to win the Ballon d’Or other than Messi and Ronaldo, I don’t think that clause would be activated.
“But I think they will get the money, Liverpool, they want around £40million.
“They’re going to use it, as we know, to buy Darwin Nunez, they’ve beaten Manchester United to him.
“Terms between club and player have been agreed, I expect negotiations between Liverpool and Benfica to ramp up this weekend and that will eventually be a record signing for Liverpool.
“So, Jurgen Klopp is not resting on his laurels after the success they’ve had this season – he wants more.”
