Sigurdsson set to play first professional game in 853 days after Everton exit

GYLFI SIGURDSSON is poised for his first professional game in 853 days.

The ex-Tottenham midfielder, 34, last played in Everton’s 5-0 thumping at Manchester City in May 2021.

But after joining Lyngby Boldklub on a one-year deal last month, the Iceland star could play for the two-time Danish champions on Friday.

Everton freed Sigurdsson in June 2022, 13 months after his last appearance.

And with the 78-cap star now training hard, Lyngby boss Freyr Alexandersson reckons his star recruit can make his debut sooner than expected.

Sigurdsson’s new club, who are sixth in the 12-team league, next play second-bottom Vejle at home.

And fellow Icelander Alexandersson told Danish outlet TV2: “We are a little ahead of our plan. He could easily be in the game on Friday.

“We really hope that he can be in the squad there, but if not then at least the following week.”

Alexandersson, 40, who quit playing 15 years ago, is delighted with former Swansea man Sigurdsson’s condition.

He said: “It looks really good. He has trained fully with the team for the last four practices and is looking sharper and sharper.

“Now we are in the period when we have to make sure that he doesn’t get injured, because he has been driving himself to death for the past three weeks.”

Sigurdsson – who was linked with Wayne Rooney’s MLS side DC United over the summer – hopes to provide Lyngby with “experience and quality”.

He said last month:  “I know there are a lot of young and talented players in the team, and I really want to learn from me so that we can lift ourselves up together.

“I have been very well received by the boys in the squad and they seem fantastic. I sense that it is a very well-balanced squad, and I am very happy to be here.

“I have heard about the good support we have, and I am very much looking forward to meeting the fans and not least playing in front of them.”
