Heung-min Son’s omission from the PFA Premier League Team of the Year has raised some eyebrows following his brilliant year for Tottenham.
The South Korea international shared the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah after firing in 23 goals, with none coming from penalties.
It was by far his best season for Spurs, in terms of numbers, as he helped fire the club back into the Champions League.
The shortlists for PFA TOTY selections were compiled by members of the players’ trade union in January, with Premier League players then voting.
Six players from league runners-up Liverpool were included in the final XI: Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Thiago, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
Premier League champions Man City had three in the team of the season: Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne.
There were only two players from other clubs included: Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger and Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
Derby County star Curtis Davies was reacting to the news on talkSPORT on Thursday night and was baffled by the omission of Son after he was left out of the shortlist for the Players’ Player of the Year award – won by Salah – and the XI.
“My biggest disappointment is Son,” Davies – who played in the Premier League with West Brom, Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Hull City – told Kick Off.
“To not see him in the six nominees just blew my mind. Not seeing him there was maybe a lean towards what was going to happen with the team.
“I can’t believe he’s not in there. He’s pulled up trees for that Tottenham side, who scraped fourth at the end of the season.
“With the PFA awards, you get the voting ballot and I think players naturally think of who is at the top.
“You look at the team, there’s Liverpool, Man City and then one Chelsea and one Manchester United player.
“That one Manchester United player happens to be Cristiano Ronaldo.
“It just comes down to, you think of a name, that’ll do, put it down. Think of a name, that’ll do, put it down.
“Sometimes it is not as thought out as it should be. You can’t blame anyone else because the players have voted for this throughout the Premier League.
“I’m not saying these players didn’t deserve it, I believe Heung-min Son, more than anyone – and having won the Golden Boot without any penalties – deserved to be in this team.”
