Twenty-first PGA Tour win for Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman wins the RBC sponsored Canadian Open thanks to a splendid last lap in -8 (although, paradoxically, he is not the best today). 66 68 65 62 (261 hits) his final score, for an overall -19 which means only one thing: we are facing a return to number 3 in the world ranking.
Behind McIlroy is Tony Finau: for today’s American score of -6 and -17 in the tournament, which breaks the co-leadership on stage at the end of the third round. Justin Thomas completes the podium, with a -15 which still makes him go back to number 5 on the OWGR (while Finau goes from 18th to 15th place).
Rory McIlroy, results
Great comeback by Justin Rose, who with a majestic -10 in which there are even three eagles manages to hoist himself up to fourth position. For the English, 15 places recovered and -14 together with the USA Sam Burns; Canadian Corey Conners does something similar, with his -8 being sixth at -12.
The three Americans Keith Mitchell, Chris Kirk and Wyndham Clark were seventh at -10, while New Zealander Danny Lee, Irish Shane Lowry and English Matt Fitzpatrick finished in tenth place with a score of -9. In May 2009 Rory McIlroy described the Ryder Cup as an exhibition.
McIlroy said: “It’s not a big goal for me. In my big project it’s not such an important event.” McIlroy went on to say, “Golf is an individual sport, you have individual goals, and my goals are to win tournaments for myself.”
European team captain Colin Montgomerie responded by saying that the Ryder Cup is not an exhibition and never will be. It is a special and unique event. The next year, in 2010, McIlroy regretted what he had said and said that the Ryder Cup is definitely not an exhibition.
In May 2011 he was criticized for missing The Players Championship. This was a controversy as 48 of the world’s top 50 were in attendance, aside from McIlroy and Lee Westwood.
