Hard hand of the PGA Tour which has decided to suspend 17 players who this week take part in London at the first Arab Super League event. Among the excellent names are Major champions such as Dustin Johnson (world number 1), Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen and Martin Kaymer.
Dustin Johnson, decision
“Their decision is dictated by financial reasons. And the expectations of these players represent a lack of respect not only for the circuit but also for our fans and partners”, the position taken by Jay Monahan, commissioner of the PGA Tour.
Between suspensions and resignation letters (such as the one sent to the PGA Tour by Johnson), the players involved will therefore not be eligible to compete not only in circuit tournaments but also in events such as the Presidents Cup.
Suspensions are also coming for those who decide to take part in the next Super League events. Among the suspects, Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed. Sergio Garcia started playing golf at the age of 3 at the “Club de Campo del Mediterráneo”, where his father Victor was a teacher.
At 12 he is already champion of his club, four years later he becomes the youngest player to pass the cut in a European Tour event, in the 1995 Turespaña Mediterranean Open. This record was beaten by amateur Jason Hark in the UBS Hong Kong Open .
In the same year Garcìa becomes the youngest player to win the European Amateur Champioship. In his amateur career he won everything: from the Topolino World Junior Championship (1994), to the European championship (1995), to the British Amateur (1998).
He turned pro in 1999 after winning the title of best amateur at the Augusta Masters, reaching a hcp of +5.4 and an official match-play average of 32 wins and one defeat. In his first year as a pro, he immediately stood out with a spectacular head-to-head with Tiger Woods at the 1999 PGA Championship, where he performed his most famous shot: an intentional slice from behind a tree with a ball ending in the green and García running and jumping to see the landing.
García has always been one of the strongest players from tee to green, with a very distinctive swing. He is one of the pillars of the European Ryder Cup team, in which he has 6 victories (2002, 2004, 2006, 2012, 2014, 2018) in 9 participations and has set the record for the youngest participant in the tournament (in the 1999 edition).
