Roger Federer attended the first day of the Laver Cup 2023, watching the challenges between Team World and Team Europe in the stands of the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada. The Swiss Maestro, co-founder of the event, witnessed the defeat of Team Europe, which lost all its matches against an overflowing Team World, led by Ben Shelton and Francisco Cerundolo.
In the second match of the day, which closed the daytime session, Cerundolo beat the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with the final score of 6-3, 7-5. The Argentine immediately took off at the start, taking the lead to 5-1, with only one missed pass allowing the Spaniard to make the deficit less bitter.
In the second Fokina didn’t take advantage of the chance to serve for the set at 5-4, then surrendering the advantages.
After the victory, the Argentine tennis player shared great praise for Federer, present among the crowd, saying: “Playing in front of Roger Federer, John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg is incredible.
I should watch them, not them me!”

Federer returned at the Laver Cup
Federer talked about the raise of young players in the ATP and WTA Tour, explaining: “We’ve had some great moments: Novak is rewriting history, Carlos Alcaraz’s exploits at Wimbledon, Daniil Medvedev playing fantastically in New York.
Many young people are emerging, a generation that I couldn’t play against. I am referring to Holger Rune, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to challenge them on the pitch but I think the future is bright.
The game is evolving, we evolve. But the great thing is that I have so much fun watching the matches and commenting on the results. Contemporary tennis is in good shape if I look at what Coco Gauff did at the US Open. I think she did something special, unique. She’s been on the circuit for five years and is an incredible girl.”
