It goes without saying that Nicolas Pepe hasn’t lived up to his billing after his sensational £72million transfer from Lille in August 2019.
There have been glimpses, though, of what he can do, but such a substantial fee demand more consistency and output. His numbers are too meek and he has failed to nail down a regular spot in Arsenal’s playing 11.
Head coach Mikel Arteta still named him in his playing 11 for Arsenal’s match against Leeds United. But the 25-year-old hardly did anything in the first half, almost non-existent at times, in offence and defensively as well.
In the end, he hogged the limelight for all the wrong reasons.
Pepe and Leeds’ winger Ezgjan Alioski were having a go at each other. Arsenal man lost his cool in the end and headbutted Alioski which was a red-card offence. He was sent off, with a fuming Arteta later slamming Pepe for his stupid action in the post-match interaction.

It’s hard for Pepe now to earn his spot back in Arteta’s playing 11, at least in the Premier League as he is suspended for three games. But Arsenal’s injury issues mean Pepe could even start the Europa League game against Molde.
